Natural Stone Walls, Steps, Paths
Natural Stone walls have been used for thousands of years. They are both effective and aestetic. The major differences between natural stone and man-made block walls come down to price, skill, and drainage.
Natural stone is more costly than manufactured block. It tends to be pretty to look at as well. A block wall fits together tightly and has a drainage system to get water out from behind the wall. (Water is the biggest enemy of any retaining wall).
A natural stone wall has natural drainage throughout the entire face because the stones don't fit exactly together. If a natural stone wall is built correctly, it will last for generations. This is where skill comes in. Natural stone walls are harder to construct than block walls because of their nonuniformity.

This boulder retaining wall helps soften up the feel of vinyl siding and suburbia.
This is a loose gravel walkway. Underneath lies a gravel bed and commercial landscape fabric. The small boulders stop the perennials from invading the path.
